Rural California in the 1980s

The last few years on the 1980s, Bill drove around California on assignment from the San Francisco Chronicle, writing about rural places and the people who inhabit them, including ranchers, farmers, environmentalists, scientists, horse wranglers, game wardens, and town folk.  Writing as William Poole, Bill published 90 Detours features between June of 1987 and December of 1990 in the This World section of the San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday edition.  Three decades later, these features, with photographs by the author, are being added to this website as time allows.
